Professor P. Rama Rao, presently Chairman, Governing Council, ARCI, Hyderabad, is an alumnus of Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, (PhD, 1964). He served as: the faculty member of the Department of Metallurgy at IISc, Bangalore (1960–62) and BHU (1962-1982); Director, DMRL, Hyderabad (1982-1991); DRDO Distinguished Scientist (1989); Secretary, DST (1991-1995); Chairman, AERB (1996-1999); Vice-Chancellor, University of Hyderabad (1999-2002); ISRO Distinguished Professor (2002-07). Professor Rama Rao has over 150 journal papers, 30 edited volumes and 60 published conference proceedings to his credit and he has served on the editorial boards of national and international journals. He is the elected fellow of The Royal Academy of Engineering (U.K.), Third World Academy of Sciences (Trieste, Italy), Ukranian Academy of Sciences (Kiev), Indian National Science Academy (INSA), Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, India and Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE). He has been the President of: Indian Academy of Sciences, 1995- 1998; INAE, 2001-2003; Indian Science Congress Association, 1997-98, Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), 1990-91 and Materials Research Society of India, 1992-94. Winner of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (1979), the Tata Gold Medal (1992) and the Platinum Medal (1994) of the IIM, the Homi J. Bhabha Award for Applied Sciences (1986), the Materials Science Prize (1996) and the Meghnad Saha Medal (2004) of the INSA; National Metallurgist Award (1999) and the Life Time Achievement Award (2009) of the Ministry of Steel; GM Modi Innovative Science and Technology Award (2010), Professor Rama Rao is also the proud recipient of the Presidential honours, Padma Shri (1989), Padma Bhushan (2001) and Padma Vibhushan (2011).
